Site Head Environmental Health & Safety

Position is responsible for the development, implementation and updating of Heath, Safety and Environmental strategies and policies. Will act in a proactive manner, as the key advisor to the Site Head, to ensure that matters that impact employee health and safety and the environment are adequately addressed. Responsible for ensuring that site programs comply with company and regulatory/legal requirements.

This position is responsible for a direct budget of approximately $850,000. Position is responsible for Hazardous waste and Hazardous waste haulers contracts.

Position is responsible for activities at the NY site, but is also expected to provide support globally under the direction of the Group Head of HS&E

Develop, implement and update Health, Safety and Environmental strategies and policies to ensure that the site operates in accordance with regulatory and company requirements.

Act as the key advisor to the Site Head regarding all HS&E issues.
Effectively manage the Occupational Health Professional.
Proactively keep abreast of all current and future regulatory requirements to ensure that the site takes a proactive approach to compliance with HS&E requirements.
Provide education and coaching to raise the level of HS&E awareness to ensure that employees understand and accept that HS&E policies and practices are a fundamental part of each individual’s job responsibilities. Grow a positive HS&E culture across the organization.
Provide coaching to individuals throughout the organization to ensure that HS&E responsibilities are understood. Provide guidance to Site Head to ensure that a top down approach is taken regarding HS&E responsibilities.
Assist Group Director of HS&E with the development and implementation of global polices.
Develop and take an active role in audits to monitor compliance with regulatory and company policies.
On an as needed basis, provide guidance and coaching to other Group HS&E professionals to ensure compliance with regulatory and company polices.
Ensure that HS&E protection programs are established and that there is compliance with legislation, reporting any deficiencies to management. Ensure that the site is informed of new legislative initiatives in HS&E.
Work with site management to foster the development of sound HS&E management systems as an integral element of site management. Develop internal performance measures.
Monitor existing site HS&E practices and recommend to management improvements where necessary.
Assist with the identification of site HS&E training needs and resources and become involved in specific programs.
Provide safety engineering, fire prevention, occupational hygiene, loss control and environmental input into major capital projects.
Provide loss control/risk management interface with insurers (with Head Office/Broker involvement).
Assist with the development of acceptable emergency/crisis plans for the site to comply with corporate guidelines.
Take an active role in management level HS&E meetings to review progress, standards and internal/external developments.
Working with the Central HS&E Team, develop meaningful key performance indicators and metrics to enable measurement of progress.

10 years industrial experience, preferably in the Pharmaceutical industry. At least 7 years in HS&E Management.
Must have specialised knowledge of HS&E in the pharmaceutical industry.
Must be able to effectively manage others.
Must have well-developed organizational skills.
Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Must have the ability to think logically and strategically.
Must be self-directed.
Must have the ability to influence individuals that have no formal reporting relationship.
Must have experience managing regulatory inspections.
Must have the ability to coach and mentor others.
Must have the ability to effectively interact with individuals at all levels of the organization.
Introduction of Global policy, strategy and integrated HS&E Management System to the site and translation into site-specific program.
